Hurricane Joe - The Delfshaven Vato

After Hurricane Joe divorced his wife, he ended up homeless due to the ever rising rent prices in his hometown of Rotterdam, once a place for the down and out but now steadily turning into a safe haven for the rich and well-off. With his Akai mpc, his suitcase of clothes and a guitar as his only possessions, he lived on the couch of whoever would offer him one, until one day he ended up in a place where he was surrounded by people who believed in and preached about ‘’the post-satanic realm’’. Inspired, he formed a new band; this time wanting to put more norteño and zydeco influences into this music, leading him to pick up and learn to play the accordion.

On his own Joe couldn't play the music he heard inside his head live so he asked some of his closest friends to back him up during live performances and in the studio. This band ended up containing four talented musicians that all have a history in the dutch hardcore, grind and/or goth scene. The band was name ‘The Delfshaven Vatos’.

The Delfshaven Vatos started rehearsing and started working on the first mixtape, that will be released by Little water Records. In the recording process his nephew almost died in a drill music conflict, leading to someone slicing his nephew with a machete, an incident that almost fatally cut up his heart. Joe decided to write the song ‘Cockroach’ about this incident. The song tells the story about the problems that come along with the rivalry within the Surinam/Afro community. As Joe sees it: Capitalism is the root of evil and social debt is the new slavery.

While working on the mixtape and after finally finding somewhat steady housing in a squatted house, a conflict between a housemate and his side bitch went totally out of control, leading up to someone trying to burn down the house and ended in a secure psychiatric facility. This conflict lead Joe to write the song ‘Black.’’

So there Joe was again, homeless and living on the streets of his beloved and despised Delfshaven area. Thus the last song of the mixtape, ‘Gypsy’, was born.

So there you have it: Hurricane Joe is the real troubadour of the streets of Rotterdam and whoever tries to deny this should walk a mile in his shoes and then fuck off to wherever he or she came from. Joe is here to stay, whatever you may think of that. Hail Hurricane Joe & the Delfshaven Vatos!
